Why fasteners are tricky
Fasteners under CN 7318 are often made from imported wire rod. Under CBAM you need the embedded emissions of both the fastener process and the precursor (the wire or billet). Most fastener units in Ludhiana or Taiwan don’t make their own wire — they heat, cut, cold-form or hot-forge, and plate.
That means you’ll usually be collecting data from two tiers:
- The fastener supplier (your direct supplier).
- Their wire rod / billet supplier.
CBAMWorks nudges your supplier to add their precursor supplier for the goods you buy, so the chain gets built once and reused.
What to ask
- Fuel and electricity for the fastener plant.
- Tonnes produced by CN 7318 subheading.
- Wire rod and billet procurement (origin, grade, mass).
- Any emissions data they already have from the wire rod supplier.
Common questions
- What CN code should I enter if I import mixed-grade fasteners? The declaration needs 8-digit CN codes, so you’ll split by grade and alloy. The engine handles the attribution.
- My supplier doesn’t know where their wire comes from. Common for small units. Default values plus the mark-up apply until they can track it.
