Precursor

An input into the production of a CBAM good that itself has embedded emissions carried through to the finished product.

Precursor emissions are inherited by downstream goods. Examples: crude steel is a precursor to flat and long steel; unwrought aluminium is a precursor to extrusions and sheet; wire rod is a precursor to fasteners and welded wire mesh. For steel, the sintered-ore precursor carries its indirect emissions into the finished steel product.
